No matter what kind of computer you have, you’re always going to run into bugs, errors, and trouble along the way. Sometimes an application won’t open, or maybe your printer won’t print. Whatever it is, it’s important to know how to go about fixing the problem — or at least get an idea of what the problem might be — before calling the geek squad.
Reboot
When a program isn’t working right, close it completely and reopen it. Sometimes just the simple act of reopening an application can have amazing restorative effects. This also is true for larger issues. If your computer itself is running slow or seems jumpy or glitchy, shut it down and restart. When you restart desktop computers, many of the temporary settings and preferences return to default and everything will be fine again.
Reinstall
If a certain program is giving you trouble repeatedly, or simply won’t open, try reinstalling the software. Reinstalling the software will return everything back to its default settings and can fix a lot of problems or bugs that may have been introduced over time.
Repair
This doesn’t mean you should get the soldering iron out and start taking apart your motherboard. It simply means you should check the hardware and make sure that everything is physically connected and not overheating. You won’t believe the number of times computer experts come into a home to fix a computer only to find that it has simply been unplugged, a cord is loose, or there is no paper in the printer. You can avoid these embarrassing mistakes, by checking all the wires and connections before calling for professional help.
If your computer feels abnormally warm or is making strange and unusual sounds, just turn off the computer and call a professional right away. Overheating and broken hardware can cause lots of damage. But if you follow these steps you should be able to fix most computer problems.
